New York City now requires one-click cancellation for Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music

The city’s ‘Click to Cancel’ rule took effect October 1, and music streaming is covered. Here is what it changes for your subscriptions and what it doesn’t.

If you can sign up for a streaming service in New York City with a click, the service now has to let you cancel the same way. The city’s “Click to Cancel” rule took effect on Thursday, October 1, and music streaming is explicitly in scope, Music Business Worldwide reported. Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music all sell subscriptions there. Music and video streamers are not among the exempted categories.

The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP), which enforces the rule, calls it a “first-in-the-nation municipal rule.” Any business with an automatic renewal or continuous service offer must give customers a cancellation method as easy as the one they used to subscribe, through the same medium. Sign up in an app and you cancel in the app. A service that takes sign-ups by website, app and phone has to take cancellations through all three. Gyms, telcos, video streamers and publishers are covered too.

The money part is the one to know about if you watch your tool and music costs. Services must give clear notice of any material change to the terms, price increases included, at least five business days before it kicks in and no more than 30 days before. That is a live issue: Spotify raised its US Premium Individual tier from $11.99 to $12.99 a month, hitting subscribers from their February 2026 billing dates. A New York subscriber who isn’t properly warned about a hike like that now has the city on their side.

Other notice windows apply to longer plans. Subscriptions with an initial paid term of a year or more, renewing for six months or longer, need a renewal notice 15 to 45 days before the cancellation deadline. Free trials longer than a month need one between three and 21 days before the first chargeable period. Anyone who has been billed for a trial they forgot about knows why that matters.

The rule also targets the “wait, how about half price?” screen. A discount offer shown after you start to cancel is prohibited if it obstructs or unreasonably delays the cancellation. DCWP softened that clause at adoption after industry comment, so save offers are not banned outright. They just can’t be a maze.

Penalties are modest: $525 for a first violation, $1,050 for a second, $3,500 for a third and after. The more useful bite for you is restitution. A violator is liable for money charged after your first attempt to cancel. If a cancellation flow fights you, note the date you tried. Complaints go to DCWP, which may assign a mediator to seek a settlement.

Most of this mirrors New York State’s existing automatic-renewal law. What the city adds, by DCWP’s own account, is its own penalty schedule, a defined measure of restitution and a wider set of cancellation channels. The city says it received more than 100 complaints in 2025 about hard-to-cancel subscriptions. The Roosevelt Institute estimated the rule would save adult New Yorkers up to $162.5 million a year.

Industry groups for film, TV, streaming, telecom, broadband, fitness and publishing opposed it, arguing state law was enough and a local rule would confuse. DCWP rejected that, noting the comments “do not identify any federal law or regulation that imposes a Click to Cancel requirement.”

That is the national backdrop. The Federal Trade Commission’s own click-to-cancel rule was vacated by the Eighth Circuit on July 8, 2025, days before it was due to take effect, after a challenge from a coalition that included the US Chamber of Commerce and NCTA. No federal rule fills the gap. Nobody has said whether Spotify or its rivals will roll out an easier cancellation flow beyond New York, or keep it city-specific. If you’re outside the five boroughs, assume nothing has changed for you yet.

If you are in the city, check the date on your next renewal, and keep your billing emails.
