Tresor.West in Dortmund closes at year-end and seeks new operators
The 750-capacity techno club is shutting down. Promoters, collectives and gastronomes have until November 15 to pitch for the space.
Tresor.West in Dortmund will close at the end of the year. Founder Dimitri Hegemann says crowd behavior is a big part of the reason: people increasingly follow individual event brands and DJs rather than a genre club, and in summer they head to festivals instead.
Hegemann also lists falling attendance and rising costs. Loyalty to a room that only does one style is fading, he says, and a strictly techno program is no longer sustainable under those conditions. He told Groove that more and more clubs and party series are being carried by volunteers just to keep meeting places alive, which makes for a hard market when you want to pay your staff.
The club opened in 2019 with a strict techno concept and the aim of putting Dortmund on the map for international club culture. The pandemic stopped it within months. Hegemann says the restart came in May 2022, but the expected revenue never showed up and the pressure kept rising.
The owners would rather hand the keys to someone than lock the door for good. The club holds about 750 people in the cellar vaults of the former Phoenix West steelworks in Dortmund-Hörde, and it has put the space out to tender. Promoters, collectives and gastronomes with a viable concept of their own for the site can apply until November 15 at presse@tresorwest.com.
So this reads less like an obituary than a rare listing: a fully built room with a 2,000-square-meter garden, as Groove reported, plus the sound and lighting rig the club is known for. Hegemann, who also started the original Tresor in Berlin, pitches the handover as infrastructure. New operators would get an audience, a network, tested workflows and house standards on awareness to build on from day one.
He also argues the site can do more than techno. Since August the garden has hosted dance events for all ages, and the vaults have a following that a successor with a broader program could inherit.
Closing nights are planned for October, November and December. No lineups have been announced yet, and the club says it will share details through its channels.
