UK late-night venues edge up 0.4%, still 29% below pre-pandemic levels

NTIA figures show late-night venue numbers rose 0.4% from March to June 2026, while nightclubs remain down 36.1% since 2020.

The number of late-night venues in the UK rose 0.4% between March and June 2026. Since 2020, 28.7% of the country’s nightlife economy has “vanished”, and nightclubs have taken the worst of it, down 36.1%.

The figures come from the Night Time Industries Association’s Night Time Economy Market Monitor, produced with CGA Intelligence and reported by Mixmag. Of the venues open before the pandemic, 48% remain and 38% have closed. Another 14% of venues have opened since.

The losses are uneven. Liverpool and Newcastle have lost 5.5% of their nightlife venues since 2020. London has lost 15.5%.

Early-evening businesses have gone the other way. Bars and restaurants are up 3.3% on pre-pandemic numbers, with cocktail bars up 39.9%, craft beer bars up 22% and themed bars up 290.8%. The NTIA describes an “early-night economy”. The biggest share of bar income, 25.1%, lands between 5 and 7 p.m. Takings from 12 to 3 p.m. and from 7 to 10 p.m. are close behind, at 24.5% and 24.4%.

NTIA CEO Michael Kill said the losses “cannot become the new normal.” He said a recovery is waiting to happen, but the government has to decide whether to speed it up or tax and cost it out of existence. He called the October Budget an extraordinary opportunity for the new Prime Minister.

The NTIA wants action on taxation and operating costs, plus investment in transport, safety and late-night infrastructure.
