Apple buys Samplab, the Swiss startup that turns audio into MIDI notes
The Swiss developer’s editor transcribes polyphonic audio into editable MIDI and has stem separation with note-level editing.
Apple has acquired Samplab, a Swiss developer that makes an audio editor with MIDI-style editing of digital audio, MusicTech reported.
Samplab’s site lists chord detection and editing in audio with MIDI export, tempo and key matching of samples, and granular stem separation with free editing of individual notes. Its plugin, the developers say, “uses AI to transcribe polyphonic audio into editable MIDI notes while preserving the original timbre.”
Logic Pro already has Flex Pitch. Cubase Pro’s VariAudio handles note-level audio editing but is not polyphonic. For polyphonic editing in any DAW, you need Melodyne or something more specialized like RipX. Stem separation has reached most leading DAWs, typically limited to about four stem types, such as vocals, drums, guitars and other.
Samplab had a free tier, limited to 10-second mono samples, and a Premium subscription at £9.99 a month that unlocked stereo output and unlimited sample length.
