Beatport splits indie dance, and indie tech gets its own Top 100
The heavier, club-focused strand of indie dance now has its own genre page, Top 100 chart and featured space on Beatport.
Beatport has pulled indie tech out of indie dance and made it a genre of its own. The two sounds had shared a single category. Indie tech now has a genre page, a Top 100 chart and a dedicated space for featured tracks and releases, all live.
Beatport describes the sound as punchy drums, prominent basslines and bold synth hooks, built for peak-time sets. It cites tech house, melodic house & techno, bass house and mainstage as influences. The artists it ties to indie tech are Adam Ten, Mita Gami, Vintage Culture and Max Styler, and the labels it names are Maccabi House, Stil vor Talent, Diynamic and Higher Ground. If you dig in that corner, the new page gathers it in one place instead of leaving it mixed in with indie dance.
Beatport says the artists and labels it consulted, across indie dance and the wider electronic music community, supported the split. Those conversations also fed a Beatportal feature, Left to Indie: Reclaiming the Spirit of Indie Dance, which traced the genre’s roots in post-punk, disco and leftfield club music. Beatport says the process sharpened the line between that tradition and the heavier, more polished material filed alongside it.
Raph Pujol, Beatport’s VP of Global Curation, framed the move partly as a correction. “We don’t always get everything right, and when we don’t, it’s important that we listen, learn and do right by the communities we serve,” he said. He added that Beatport “felt a responsibility to protect that identity while still embracing where the music is heading”.
For labels, the charts are what make placement matter. Indie tech releases are now ranked against each other instead of inside the indie dance chart.
Beatport has redrawn its genres before, dividing techno into peak time/driving and raw/deep/hypnotic categories. It hasn’t said whether existing indie dance releases will be recategorized, which is worth knowing if you keep crates organized by Beatport genre.
