Roni Size will play a rave 1,375 feet down a Welsh slate mine
The set will be pushed into the rock, recorded as it comes back through slate, mud and water, and fed into the live mix.
Roni Size will play 1,375 feet underground on Thursday, October 15, in an abandoned slate mine beneath the mountains of Cwmorthin in Wales. He is attempting to set a record for the “deepest underground rave in history,” Mixmag reported.
Vibration transducers will “drive” the set into the slate. Geophones and hydrophones will capture the “frequencies travelling through rock, mud and water” to record the mine’s acoustic response, and the reverberated sounds will then be used in the live mix.
Roni Size says: “How much more could you reflect the environment than by pumping a set into the mountain, hearing the sound travelling through the slate, rock and mud, and bringing it back into the mix? It’s the most underground of underground raves ever.”
A limited number of ballot winners will make the descent, down dark stairways and zip lines over “sheer rock faces,” to the chamber where he plays. The set will be streamed on G Shock Radio.
