Youth Music puts £2.4 million into racial equity grants of up to £120,000

The UK charity’s Recharge Fund will back around 20 organizations led by and for communities experiencing racial injustice. Applications close December 4.

UK charity Youth Music has opened applications for The Recharge Fund: Racial Equity, a £2.4 million pot backed by National Lottery funding via Arts Council England, Mixmag reported. Grants go up to £120,000 each, and around 20 organizations will receive them over the next four years.

The money is for organizations “led by and for communities experiencing racial injustice.” Recipients can spend it freely, in the areas where it is “most needed”. Youth Music names leadership development, staff wellbeing, digital infrastructure and other essential overheads as examples. Applicants also get workshops, webinars, one-to-one sessions and application access funding.

The launch follows a recent Pathway Fund report, which found that 76% of Black and ethnic minority-led organizations believe they have been refused funding because of race or ethnicity.

“The research shows that young people from Black and global majority backgrounds can see a future for themselves in creativity, but are far less likely to see themselves represented in positions of leadership and power,” said Youth Music CEO Adam Joolia. “We want that to change.”

Applications opened on Friday, October 16, and close on December 4.
